Why Are Gas Prices So High?

For the most part I think I am a pretty intelligent guy, and for the life of me I can not answer this question.
It is getting crazy. Friday our local gas prices went up about 5 cents. I filled up somewhere near the top of that price range, around $3.49 a gallon. And that price was still there on Saturday.
On the way to work today, just 2 days later, that same gas station had the price at $3.61 a gallon.
Now c’mon people, what is up with that. Really, what is causing the gas prices to go up 15 cents almost [...]

Water4gas Scam - Rip-off Or Not

by Adrian Fletcher The price of the goods we need every day seems to increase every time you visit your grocery store. Inflation is on the rise for over a year now. An economic downturn and a rise in oil prices is often blamed for this state of affairs. Indeed, the upward movement of prices is no more apparent than at the gas pump. With gas prices as high as they are, it’s easy to see why people are starting to seek out alternatives to save money on fuel costs. One of the newest fads out there

Let Them Eat Sand

by Jeff Huber I thought Prime Minister Nuri al Maliki showed state fair size baby makers when he told us to start packing our caissons and hit the dusty trail that leads out of Iraq. Then General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, the closest thing Pakistan has to a head of state, did Maliki one better when he announced that "no external force" would be allowed to conduct operations inside his country. Miracle Monday

It's Miracle Monday! Instead of highlighting a miracle today, I thought I would highlight a portion of scripture. As the stock market is crashing and retirement funds disappearing and as gas prices are at an all time high and many people are worried about how they are going to pay their bills and feed their families, I just wanted to remind everyone of this...25"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more

Michael Pollan: Dear Farmer in Chief

In a long and serious article on food policy in today’s NYTimes Magazine, Michael Pollan writes that the era of cheap and abundant food is coming to a close. He says the next American president, no matter which man is elected, is going to find that the health of our nation’s food system is a critical issue of national security. His argument is that unless we address the industrial food system we will not be able to make significant progress resolving the three main issues of our day — health c

Michael Pollan: Farmer in Chief After cars, the food system uses more fossil fuel than any other sector of the economy — 19 percent. And while the experts disagree about the exact amount, the way we feed ourselves contributes more greenhouse gases to the atmosphere than anything else we do — as much as 37 percent, according to one study. Whenever farmers clear land for crops and till the soil, large quantities of carbon are released into the air. But the 20th-century industrialization of agri

Run your Car on Water: Scam or Big-Money Saver at the Gas Pump?

by Dr. Matthew Loop For many, these high gas prices have become almost unbearably out of hand. The price of gas has reached as much as 5.00 a gallon in some of the busier areas of the country, and all signs to point to it only getting worse if relief is not found. It has gotten to the point that few people are able to afford to fill up their cars on a weekly basis and many people are demanding research in alternative fuels so that we can reduce our dependence on foreign oil and decrease our ga

In A Corporate Approach to Rescuing the World’s Fisheries, Nicholas Day describes how big bad corporations are pressing for sustainable fishing [my prior posts]: Worried about the reliability of future supplies, major corporations — including Wal-Mart, Unilever, and McDonald’s — are increasingly using their economic clout to bring about change in an industry that has a long history of deci

The best time to purchase gas

What is the best time to get gas? I read an interesting article from a local newspaper that said, “… Americans currently spend $2.57 billion more than they should for gasoline and diesel fuel due to gasoline expanding at warmer temperatures.” That is just unbelievable to me. I have always heard that you should buy gasoline at the coolest time of the day (9pm-6:30am) but I had no idea that so much money was being lost to fuel expansion. The article goes on to say that, “retailers currently mea

Letters to the Editor: Prop H Stop Parroting, Totally Satisfied, Give Schneider a Break, Dump Pelosi

Prop H: Stop Parroting You do readers a disservice by doing nothing beyond parroting PG&E when it comes to discussing Prop H (Potstickers, Oct. 3). The measure contains only one mandate: that the SFPUC study how best to bring San Francisco’s electricity sourcing to a 100 percent clean profile on a phased-in basis by 2040. And the cost of acquiring PG&E’s assets, should the SFPUC decide that that should be part of the plan, would be far less than the $4 billion that PG&E throws out

How To Save On Car Fuel

There are numerous reasons why biodiesel is the best choice instead of regular diesel fuel or alternative fuel choices. It is something worth thinking about too when you are tired of paying the high prices for diesel fuel. Here are a few good reasons why biodiesel is something you should be using in your vehicle right now. Biodiesel contains less water than diesel fuel. All fuel is mixed with water somewhere along the line. However, the actual amount of water that ends up in the fuel and what

by Dr. Matthew Loop As gas prices continue to rise, being able to afford many of life’s necessities becomes much more difficult. Until car or gas companies find better ways to utilize gas and lower the cost, anything we can do to help relieve some of the high gas prices by improving your cars MPG is incredibly useful. Purchase your gas when it is cold outside, because the cold causes the gasoline to concentrate. During warmer weather, gas expands which gives the pump the impression that more g

NOBODY ASKED ME BUT,

Each week, we present reflections on human society by a 78 year old man with the curious mind of a 12 year old. Nobody Asked Me But. I always feel completely secure on a bus because I have complete confidence in bus drivers. I have never felt the need to gloat at an enemy’s misfortune. It is not who I am. The other day someone crumpled a piece of paper and I burst out in laughter. In my youth, paper was crumbled on the radio to depict action. There should be a law that prevents three truck
